The Spiffy Dapper is one of Singapore's longest-running independent cocktail bars, and it moved around to get there. It began as a hidden room above Boat Quay, shifted to Amoy Street, and eventually settled on River Valley Road. Through every address the feeling stayed the same: dark wood, low light, a 1920s jazz mood, and a gin list you can get lost in.

Anthony is a co-owner and operator here, and one of the people who turned it into a regular haunt. He will be the first to say the drinks were only ever half of it. Over the years the regulars became friends, and some of those friends became the people he went on to build his next projects with.

Cult Commons sits on Level 02 of 294 River Valley Road, directly above The Spiffy Dapper. It is a space for makers and creatives, running on events, pop-ups, artist collaborations and cultural programming. The thinking behind it is simple: human craft still matters.

A place like this only works because of the people who hold it together. Dani works the barber chair, Jovan runs the floor as general manager, and George, the developer behind it, put up the space. Anthony sits somewhere in the mix, shaping the hospitality, the programming and the general feel of the room.

There is vinyl on the turntable and leather seats that have seen some use. It was never meant to be a coworking office, and it was never trying to be exclusive. It is simply a good place to end up in, and to meet the people you might not have otherwise.

Baby Rascal was the loud one. A casual, high-energy concept, it gave Anthony a chance to see how far branding and personality could carry a place without the polish of his other work.

It ran its course, and that was always fine. What it really left behind was a lesson in building something from nothing, and that lesson went straight into the projects that came after.
